Inpatient Mental Health Care Designed By and For The LGBTQ+ Community

The Wisteria Program is a inpatient mental health program specifically for LGBTQ adults seeking compassionate, confidential care. Our mission is to provide a supportive, inclusive environment where adults can stabilize, build coping skills, and work toward long-term mental wellness. The program is designed to meet the unique needs of LGBTQ adults, ensuring that each participant feels respected, understood, and empowered throughout their care journey.
The Wisteria Program’s Symbolism
The Wisteria Program is named for the wisteria vine to represent the endurance, interconnectedness, and vibrant identity of the LGBTQ+ community.
-
Endurance and Longevity: Wisteria vines are incredibly long-lived and resilient; they can grow for over a hundred years, symbolizing the enduring strength of LGBTQ+ individuals in the face of systemic challenges and historical adversity.
-
Support and Interconnection: Because wisteria grows by gracefully intertwining with a support system (like a trellis or arbor), it mirrors the program’s goal of helping patients build a “chosen family” and a supportive community network.
-
Vibrant Authenticity: The cascading, colorful blooms of the wisteria represent the beauty of living out loud. The flower’s purple and lavender hues have deep historical roots in queer culture as symbols of pride and resistance.
-
Flexibility and Growth: The vine is known for its ability to wrap around obstacles rather than being stopped by them, symbolizing the adaptive “flexibility” and personal growth required to navigate identity in a complex world.
Why Choose The Wisteria Program?
-
True Affirmative Care: No explaining your pronouns or history. We get it.
-
Specialized Tracks: Support for gender dysphoria, social transition, and trauma recovery.
-
Family Systems Work: We work with your chosen family to build a support network that actually supports you.
Who Is The Program For?
Today, people face many challenges and stressors on their journey that can lead to serious mental health difficulties. We all want to be seen and accepted as our authentic selves, but struggling with one’s identity can be especially difficult.
Living as a gender or sexual minority and expressing this identity while facing all the general difficulties of being a young person presents new and unfamiliar obstacles for some people.
Individuals in the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender & Questioning (LGBTQ) community often face a number of unjust issues:
-
Social Stigma: We help patients dismantle internalized negativity and build a resilient self-image that can withstand the pressures of a society that may not always be affirming.
-
Abuse: Our clinicians provide a safe, trauma-informed space to process the physical or emotional harm often directed at LGBTQ+ youth, focusing on restoring a sense of bodily autonomy and safety.
-
Harassment: We equip young adults with assertive communication skills and boundary-setting techniques to manage the mental health impact of bullying or workplace/campus discrimination.
-
Family Rejection: Our program facilitates a path toward healing, whether that involves reparative family therapy or helping the patient cultivate a “chosen family” and a supportive community network.
The weight of rejection and social stigma combined with the increased risk of bullying, harassment, discrimination, and physical abuse impacts people who identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, questioning, intersex, or asexual (LGBTQIA+).
But there is hope.
The Wisteria Program is an LGBTQ safe zone. This program addresses psychological and emotional distress by examining how identifying as non-binary, trans, or queer can impact one’s health and well-being in a society that is not accepting of these gender differences. Our LGBTQ inpatient mental health services are designed to provide a safe and affirming space for healing.
